Cytotoxic Activity of Mangostins from the Fruit Pericarp of Garcinia mangostana L.
Cytotoxicity of the two xanthones isolated from mangosteen, a-mangostin (1) and g-mangostin (2), against a panel of different cancer cell lines was studied. Compounds (1) and (2) showed potentially cytotoxic effects on the colon cancer cell line SW480 with IC50 values of 5.17 and 3.22mg/ml as well as on the lung cancer line LU-1 with IC50 values of 5.54 and 3.54 mg/ml respectively. In addition, these compounds exhibited no toxicity to fibroblast cells of mouse (IC50 value > 20 mg/ml). The results suggest that a-mangostin and g-mangostin could be considered as leading compounds for the development of anticancer drugs.
