\n\tSummary
\n\tAnti-obesity Effects of two Herbal Recipes in Mice
\n\tPlatycodon grandiflorum, Camellia sinensis and Nelumbo nucifera have been mentioned to be beneficial for the suppression of obesity. However, this effect and toxicity of a combination of these plants still remain unknown. In this study, Recipes 1 (CT1) and 2 (CT2) were prepared from extracts of the above-mentioned plants. Anti-obesity effects of these two recipes were investigated in mice fed on a high-fat (HF) diet. Male Swiss albino mice became obese by feeding the HF diet over 4 weeks compared to normal diet group. Mice fed on HF containing 3% and 5% CT1 and CT2 gained significantly less body weight than that of control animals fed on HF diet alone during a 9-week experimental period. Acute toxicity study of these recipes revealed normal behaviour and no mice was dead even at 6g/kg (highest dose that could be administered through oral route for mice). Our results suggest that these two recipes may be useful in the treatment of obesity and related disorders as anti-obesity agents.
