Effects of Ama Kong’s Remedy on Growth of

Accessory Sexual Organs and Plasma Testosterone Levels in  Mice

We have previously demonstrated that Ama Kong’s remedy may have stimulatory effect on endurance. In the present study, we examined in vivo effects of Ama Kong’s remedy on steroidogenesis in mice. Different doses of Ama Kong extract powder 187.5 and  375mg/kg body weight were given orally to immature or mature mice from 1 to 14 days. The plasma level of testosterone was evaluated by ELISA test. The weight of reproductive organs was also determined. The study results indicated that Ama Kong’s remedy significantly reduced the plasma testosterone level in immature mice but not in mature mice. Ama Kong extract at 375 mg/kg body weight could also significantly reduce the weight of reproductive organs in mature mice. However, at lower dose (187.5 mg/kg) but not higher dose (375 mg/kg) for 14 days, it increased the weight of levator animuscle. Taken together, the study demonstrated that Ama Kong’s remedy could alter the sexual function of mice and the current observation is likely a negative feedback due to the high dose of this extract rather than an antiandrogenic effect.
