Summary
Study on the Chemical Compositions of Panax bipinnatifidus and Panax stipuleanatus
Preliminary studies on chemical compositions of the rhizomes and roots of Panax bipinnatifidus andPanax stipuleanatus were done. Qualitative the chemical evaluation showed that their rhizomes and roots contain saponins, triterpenoids, essential oil, reduced sugars, organic acids and polyuronic acids. The quantitative analysis of fatty acids and trace elements was also made.
The saponin components of the rhizomes and roots of P. bipinnatifidus and P. stipuleanatus were quantitatively determined by Namba’s weight method. The result revealed that the total saponin contents found in those materials were 5.86% and 6.14% respectively.
Two sapogenins were isolated from the hydrolysed product of total saponins from the rhizomes and roots of Panax bipinnatifidus and Panax stipuleanatus by means of precipitability and recrystallization. Their structures were identified as oleanolic acid on the basis of m.p., IR, 13C-NMR analysis.
Keywords: Panax bipinnatifidus, Panax stipuleanatus, oleanolic acid, polyacetylene
