Summary
Effects of silymarin extracted from introduced milk thistle on experimental chronic hepatitis model in rats
A preparation of silymarin extracted from milk thistle fruits [Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn.] has been subjected to pharmacological study for evaluation of hepatoprotective activity, antioxidant activity and inhibitory action on formation of liver cirrhosis using a carbon tetrachloride-induced chronic hepatitis model in rats. The result showed that oral administration of the extract decreased the carbon tetrachloride-induced increase in MDA content in liver by 23.12% (P<0.001), in collagen content in liver by 9.39% (P<0.05), in SGPT activity by 36.66% (P<0.05), in bilirubin content in serum by 15.17% (P=0.05). Thus, the extract had antioxidant activity and inhibitory action on formation of liver cirrhosis and helped to preserve liver function in rats
