Summary
The effect of Morinda citrifolia fruit extracts of Viet Nam on rat hepatic enzyme metabolism
Morinda citrifolia, known commercially as noni, grows widely throughout the Pacific and is one of the valuable sources of traditional medicines among Pacific island societies. We tested the effect of Morinda citrifolia fruit extracts of Viet Nam on rat hepatic enzyme metabolism. The treatment with Morinda citrifolia markedly reduced the pathologic changes observed in CCl4- chronically treated rats. Morinda citrifolia extract significantly increased SOD enzyme activity by 31% compared with control model rats and 38% compared with control normal ones. The imbalance in lipid metabolism could be the reason for increase in lipid peroxidation. The treatment with Morinda citrifolia significantly inhibited the rise of MDA, and improved antioxidant status in CCl4- treated rats. Besides, Morinda citrifolia fruit extracts significantly increased the P450 activity in comparison with the negative control (specially, P450 reductase- NADPH (CPR) activity). So, Morinda citrifolia fruit extracts of Viet Nam were effective in increasing P450 enzyme activity.
