Summary

A series of synthetic 2,5-dihydroxychalcones were evaluated for antioxidant activity in three different assay settings, including DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay, superoxide radical scavenging assay,  and lipid peroxidation inhibitory assay. Most of the chalcones showed strong to moderate activity in all three assays. Some compounds, for example 2-chloro-2’,5’-dihydroxychalcone, 3,4,2’,5’-tetra-hydroxychalcone, 3,5,2’,5’-tetrahydroxychalcone exhibited comparable activity to alpha-tocoferol.
