Summary

Analgesic, Anti-Pyretic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of the Extracts from Launaea sarmentosa Leaves

Launaea sarmentosa Willd. Sch. Bip. Ex Kuntze has been traditionally used as a folk herbal remedy for the many diseases such as jaundice, diuretic, blood purifier and hepatoprotective action. The study investigated effects of the aqueous and 45% ethanol extracts from L. sarmentosa leaves (ALS and ELS) in acetic acid-induced writhing test, Brewer’s yeast-induced pyrexia test and carrageenan-induced hind paw edema test. The oral doses of L. sarmentosa leaf extracts were chosen in equivalent to 1.25 g and 2.5 g of raw materials/kg mouse body weight. The results showed that ALS and ELS at respective doses of 0.6 g/kg, 1.2 g/kg and 0.54 g/kg, 1.08 g/kg had analgesic effect by reducing the number of writhing. In addition, ALS and ELS at respective doses of 0.6 g/kg, 1.2 g/kg and 0.54 g/kg, 1.08 g/kg also expressed anti-pyretic effect by reducing the rectal temperature and anti-inflammatory effect by reducing the inflamed hind paw volume. The study demonstrated the analgesic, anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous and ethanol extracts from L. sarmentosa leaves on mouse models of pain, fever and inflammation.
