\n\tSome Pharmacological Effects of Bacosids Derived from Bacopa monnieri

\n\tThe protective effect of bacosid A (the putative bioactive component, a triterpenoid saponin isolated from Bacopa monnieri) on the structural and functional damage of the tissue membrane, which could be attributed to its free radical scavenging and anti-lipid peroxydative effect. The present study was performed to investigate the in vitro antioxydant activity of total saponin and bacosids: bacosid A, bacosid B, bacosid C derived from Bacopa monnieri using DPPH test and malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) test. The results showed that total saponin as well as its bacosids were endowed with free radical scavenging activity in DPPH test and anti-lipid peroxydative effect in MDA test. On the other hand, the present study investigated the effects of total saponin and bacosids on pentobarbital sleeping time in  mice. The results demonstrated that among total saponin and bacosids: bacosid A, bacosid B (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg per os) had the stimulating effect on central nervous system  while bacosid C had the suppressing effect.
