\n\tSummary
\n\tMemory-Improving Effect and Antistress effect of Total Saponin Derived
\n\tfrom Bacopa monnieri
\n\tBacopa monnieri (being named Brahmi in Sanskrit that means Creator) is what is known in Ayurvedic (Indian traditional) medicine as a rasayana - a plant that helps to prevent early aging and degeneration. It is proved to be effective as a cerebral stimulant - improving memory and cognitive abilities and helping to treat nervous tension, depression and stress. The present study investigated the effects of total saponin derived from Bacopa monnieri on scopolamin-induced impairment of learning and memory by using Morris water maze and passive avoidance tests (step-down test). The results demonstrated that total saponin at the doses of 50-100 mg/kg as well as Ginkgo biloba standardized extract (TanakanÒ) had the improving effects on scopolamin-induced impairment of learning and memory. On the other hand total saponin at the doses of 50-100 mg/kg exhibited the antistress effect on social isolation stress-induced decrease in pentobarbital sleeping time.
