Study on the Chemistry and In vitro Antioxidant Activity
of Saponin from Schefflera Sp3
Two sapogenins (genin I and genin II) were isolated from the hydrolyzed product of total saponin from the trunk of Schefflera sp3 by silica gel column and recrystallization. Their structures were identified as oleanolic acid (genin I) and hederagenin (genin II) on the basis of m.p., IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR analysis compared with authentic samples. The results of DPPH and MDA test indicated that n-BuOH extract showed the strongest activity as compared with aqueous and MeOH extracts. Oleanolic acid and hederagenin did not produce any antioxidant activity in DPPH test.
