Summary

Phenolic Constituents from n-Butanol Extract of the Roots of Reynoutria japonica Houtt.

A phytochemical study on the n-butanol –soluble extract of the roots of Reynoutria japonica Houtt. resulted in the isolation of two phenolic acids, isophthalic acid (1) and galic acid (2) together with a flavonoide cynaroside (3). Their structures were identified on the basis of NMR, MS spectroscopic analysis and in comparison with the published NMR data. Compound 1 was isolated for the first time from the roots of this plant.

1. Introduction

Reynoutria japonica Houtt. (synonym Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb.et.Zucc.) is a plant from the Polygonaceae family, being native to Eastern Asia. In Vietnam, R. japonica Houtt. is widely distributed and is usually found in sunny places on hills and high mountains. Its root is a traditional medicinal plant of Vietnam and many other countries in the world having pepper-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiviral, diuretic, anti-cough, sputum loss effects [1]

In the chemical composition of the         R. japonica Houtt roots, the two main groups having a large amount of quantity are anthranoid (mainly anthraquinone) and stilbenoid. They are significant factor contributing to biological activities of the tree. Besides, the root contains a lot of chemical compounds such as flavonoids, phenylpropanoid, phenols, alkaloids, quinones, amino acids... [3,4,5,6]

Though the world has made the study of the chemical composition of this medicine but in our country it has not many works full disclosure of the chemical composition and biological activity of R. japonica Houtt. Therefore, understanding the chemical composition and further provide the basis for the application of this herbal medicine resources to support the treatment of cancer, cardiovascular... In previous study we reported 11 compounds isolated from n-hexane and ethyl acetate extract [2]. In this article, we described the isolation and structural identification of three phenolic compounds from the n-butanol extract of the roots of R. japonicaHoutt.
