Summary
Study of Medicinal Plants Named Diep ha chau (Phyllantus spp.) Growing in South Vietnam
Part I: Botanical Investigation of Medicinal Plants Named Diep ha chau
In Vietnamese traditional medicine, Phyllanthus amarus Schum. et Thonn. (P.a) andPhyllanthus urinaria L. (P.u) have long been used for treatment of kidney and liver diseases.P.a is well-known for its anti-hepatitis activity and widely used for treatment of hepatitis [1]. The bioactivity of P.u and some other species of Phyllanthus, however, remain little known. They are used interchangeably in many cases not only in VN but also many other countries[1].The aim of our study on P. spp. is to prove the usages of these P. spp. In this report, botanical characteristics of these plants were investigated. Aerial parts of P. spp (25 vouchers) were collected in South Vietnam (2003). Morphological characters of these species were compared with P.a in order to identify and distinguish them during sample collection [2]. As a result, we identified with P.a, P.u, P. sp growing in three provinces of South VN, except P. niruri L. They revealed significant differences in morphological and microscopic characters: stem, leaves, flower, fruit, seed and TLC patterns of main constituents. The plants can be distinguished by their morphological and chromatographic characters.
Keywords: Phyllanthus, morphology of Phyllanthus; Phyllanthus amarus.
