ANDROGENIC EFFECTS OF AMA KONG´S REMEDY ON CASTRATED MICE (Tạp chí Dược liệu, tập 14, số 2/2009)

Summary

Androgenic effect of AMA KONG’ remedy on castrated mice

A previous study on androgenic effects of Ama Kong’s remedy at doses of 187.5 and 375 mg/kg body weight on immature or mature male mice revealed that Ama Kong’s remedy might have a negative feedback effect due to high dose. The aim of this study is to further investigate androgenic effects of Ama Kong’ remedy (dried extract powder) at lower doses (37.5 and 75 mg/kg body weight) on castrated male  mice. An increase of the weight of male sexual organs (seminal vesicles and prostate gland) was used as an index of androgenic effect. On the other hand, an increase of levator ani was used as an index of protein anabolic activity. ELISA technique was applied to measure plasma testosterone level. Andriol® Testocaps (testosterone undecanoat, 4 mg/kg body weight) was used as reference drug. The results revealed that testosterone content in castrated mice was lower than that in normal mice, which was ascribable to experimental sexual dysfunction. The Ama Kong extract as well as Andriol® Testocaps significantly increased testosterone levels in normal mice (37.5 mg/kg and 75 mg/kg body weight) and in castrated mice (75 mg/kg body weight). However, the extract did not affect the weight of male sexual organs (seminal vesicles and prostate gland) and the weight of levator ani in both normal and castrated mice.
