Study on Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitory Activity of Morinda citrifolia L. Fruit Extracts

Xanthine oxidase is a key enzyme which can catalyze xanthine to uric acid causing hyperuricemia in humans. This study examines the in vitro xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities of the ethanolic extract of Morinda citrifolia fruit and its fractions by using the xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity assay. The results showed that diethyl ether fraction and chloroform fraction exhibit xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity with IC50 value of 49.22 µg/ml and 118.72 µg/ml, respectively. The IC50 value of allopurinol used as a positive control was 0.1225 μg/ml. The total extract, ethyl acetate fraction and aqueous fraction had low xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities while the n-butanol fraction had no inhibitory activity. The study demonstrated that the effects for Morinda citrifolia fruit used for the gout treatment were based on the xanthine oxidase inhibitory action.
