The Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Crude Extracts from Blepharis maderaspatensis
Blepharis maderaspatensis L. Roth (BM) (Acanthaceae) has been used in folk medicine for wound healing or treatment of sore throat, arthritis and various stomach disorders. The previous study showed that ethanol extract of Blepharis maderaspatensis possessed good antioxidant property with IC50 values of 37.4 and 44.1 µg/mL in DPPH and NO scavenging assays, respectively. Moreover, ethyl acetate fraction possessed the best antioxidant property with IC50 value of 8.3 µg/mL in DPPH assay. In the present study, analgesic effect of ethanol extract or aqueous extract of Blepharis maderaspatensis was investigated using acetic acid-induced writhing test. Anti-inflammatory effects of Blepharis maderaspatensis were studied using carrageenan-induced mouse hind-paw edema and Freund’s complete adjuvant-induced chronic arthritis models. The results showed that either ethanol extract or aqueous extract has analgesic effect and anti-inflammatory effect in carrageenan-induced edema. In Freund’s complete adjuvant-induced chronic arthritis, ethanol extract possessed anti-inflammatory effect better than aqueous extract. Moreover, ethanol extract possessed anti-inflammatory effect better than positive controls. The findings suggest more application ofBlepharis maderaspatensis ethanol extract in clinical use.
