Summary
In vitro α-Amylase and α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activities of Crude and
Fractionated Extracts of Clerodendrum inerme Leaves Collected from Phu Quoc Island
Inhibition of carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes such as α-amylase and α-glucosidase is one of the approaches for controlling postprandial glucose level. This study is to evaluate in vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of crude and fractionated extracts of Clerodendrum inerme leaves. The results showed that crude extracts of Clerodendrum inerme leaves presented α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities with the IC50 value of 88.96 and 164.82 µg/mL (45% ethanol extract); 107.33 and 174.04 µg/mL (aqueous extract); 115.77 and 180.72 µg/mL (70% ethanol extract); 110.68 and 361.72 µg/mL (96% ethanol extract), respectively. The results also demonstrated that all of the fractionated extracts from 45% ethanol extract exhibited α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities, in which the ethyl acetate extract has shown highest α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory effect with IC50 values of 53.98 and 184.90 μg/mL, sequentially, which was comparable with acarbose (231.11 and 694.83 μg/mL). Further in vivo studies should be performed to clarify the regulating effect of Clerodendrum inerme leaves on postprandial blood glucose.
