Summary

Anti-Hyperuricemic Effects and Inhibitory Activity of Liver Xanthine Oxidase by Apium graviolens Seeds in Potassium Oxonate-Pretreated Mice

The effect of the extract of the seeds from Apium graviolens on the serum uric acid level were investigated using hyperuricemic mice induced by potassium oxonate. When administered orally at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg for 5 days, the extract of celery seed reduced the serum uric acid level by 59.3, 52.5 and 43.8%, respectively. Furthermore, this extract inhibited significantly mouse liver xanthine oxidase activity (% inhibition at 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg were 12.1 and 10.5%, respectively). These results suggested that hypouricemic effects of Apium graviolens may be achieved by the xanthine oxidase inhibition.
