Summary

In vitro Study on Antioxidant Activity of Pogonatherum crinitum (Thunb.) Kunth

Pogonatherum crinitum (Thunb.) Kunth is a wild grass which has been used in ethnic medical experience for treatment of many inflammatory diseases including urethritis, cystitis, nephritis and hepatitis. There is a little of scientific profiles on P. crinitum until now. The study was performed for primarily screening biological activities of P. crinitum. Antioxidant activities of crude extract and its fractionated extracts (diethyl ether, ethyl acetate and water, successively) were elucidated by using DPPH and malondialdehyde (MDA) assays. The results showed that P. crinitum extracts has both free radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation inhibiting activities. In DPPH test, ethyl acetate fraction showed higher activity than crude extract and other fractions. In MDA test, all test extracts exhibited higher antioxidant activity than the positive control Trolox in which diethyl ether fraction had strongest antioxidant activity.
