Studies on the anatomical features of Gynura species (Asteraceae) growing in Vietnam

The three species of the genus Gynura Cass., planted in Hanoi, have the same anatomical structure of leaf and stem. The vein is highly convex beneath and slightly above. The upper and lower epidermis is composed of a line of small rectangular or egg-shaped cells. The protective hair is a multicellular line of 5-7 cells. The thick-corner tissue consists of 1-2 layers of cells adjacent to the upper and lower epidermis. In the middle of the vein, there are one or three egg-shaped liber bunches of the same structure. The soft tissues are composed of round or polygonal cells of large size and thin wall, arranged irregularly and closely one another. Leaf-blade: The upper and lower epidermis is similar to that in the vein, but of larger size.

The cross-section of the stem is roundish. From outside inwards, there is a layer of epidermis consisting of a layer of small rectangular cells. The protective hair has 5-7 multicellular cells. Adjacent to the epidermis is a layer of thick-corner tissues, consisting of 2-3 layers of cells. The soft tissues in the bark are composed of round or polygonal cells. Above each bunch of liber is a hard-tissue arch. The older the stem is, the thicker and larger the layer of hard tissues is. The soft tissues in the core are composed of egg-shaped or polygonal cells.
