Summary

Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitory Activity of Embelia ribes Burm. f. Fruits Collected in Southern Vietnam

and its Chemical Components

Extracts from Embelia ribes Burm. f. fruits in southern Vietnam showed good effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition, with IC50 values of 0.23-0.45 mg/ml. Among them, the dichloromethane fraction showed the potent inhibitory activity. The chemical investigation of this fraction resulted in the isolation of five compounds (1-5). Their chemical structures were identified as kaempferol (1), quercetin (2), hydroxymethylfurfural (3), 5-(8′-Z-heptadecenyl)resorcinol (4), and embelin (5) based on spectral data analysis and literature references. The in vitro AChE inhibitory activity shows embelin may be a principal compound in the most active dichloromethane fraction.
