Summary

Androgenic Effects of Curculigo orchioides in Rats

Curculigo orchioides Gaertn. is a herbal medicine widely distributed in Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, India, Japan and China. The rhizomes of this plant possess medicinal properties and are sweet, cooling, diuretic, aphrodisiac, viriligenic and tonic. This study aims to clarify the androgenic effects of Curculigo orchioides rhizoma ethanol extract (COE) in normal rats and castrated rats as an experimental model of sexual dysfunction. The results showed that 14-day-treatment of COE at the dose of 525 mg/kg increased the weight of androgen-dependent tissues including ventral prostate, seminal vesicle but not levator ani-bulbocavernosus muscle in castrated rats. Moreover, this treatment significantly and dose-dependently enhanced the serum testosterone levels in the castrated animals. However, both the weight of androgen-dependent tissues and serum testosterone levels did not show any statistically significant differences after 21 days treatment of COE at the doses of 350 and 525 mg/kg in normal rats.
