Summary
Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Ethanol Extract from Gnetum montanum Lianas in Experimental Models
The anti-inflammatory activity of ethanolic extract of Gnetum montanum Markgr lianas (GME) harvested in the North of Vietnam was investigated in experimental models: carrageenan-induced peritonitis in rats, heat-induced hemolysis and hypotonicity-induced hemolysis in human red blood cells (HRBC), LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells. GME at doses of 87.5, 170, and 350 mg/kg significantly reduced leukocyte count, myeloperoxidase activity, and total protein in carrageenan-induced peritoneal exudates when compared with the control group. HBRC stabilization models revealed that GME inhibited hemolysis in both the heat-induced model and hypotonicity-induced model with the IC50 of 50.5 µg/mL and 22.3 µg/mL, respectively. GME also inhibited NO production in stimulated RAW 264.7 cells with the IC50 of 12.6 µg/mL. The obtained results have provided scientific evidence for the use of GM to treat inflammatory diseases according to folk experience.
