ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF POLYSCIAS FRUTICOSA ROOTS, LEAVES AND THEIR COMBINATION

Summary

Antioxidant Activity of Polyscias fruticosa Roots, Leaves and their Combination

Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms. has been utilized anciently in Vietnamese traditional medicines to support the medication of infirmities. The study aimed to explore the antioxidant activity of P. fruticosa roots, leaves, and their combinations as well as the correlation with total polyphenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) using Pearson’s method. The results showed that the TPC and TFC of P. fruticosa were arranged in sort of descending order as leaf extract (L) > 1 leaf: 1 root extract (1L: 1R) > 2 leaf: 1 root extract (2L: 1R) > 1 leaf: 2 root extract (1L: 2R) > root extract (R). P. fruticosa extracts exhibited antioxidant activity via their DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical cation decolorization, and reducing power capacities. There was a significantly negative correlation between TPC and TFC in P. fruticosa leaf and root extracts with their IC50 of DPPH, ABTS inhibitions, and reducing power activity with correlation coefficient (r) of -0.8778, -0.7518, and -0.9571 (TPC), -0.9703, -0.6705, and -0.7770 (TFC), respectively. It was suggested that P. fruticosa leaves have great potential for antioxidant activity based on the high total polyphenol and flavonoid contents.
