Summary

Antioxidant and Hypoglycemic Activities of Processed Vietnamese Ginseng Extract

The study was designed to investigate the antioxidant and hypoglycemic effects of powdered extract from processed Vietnamese ginseng. The in vitro study was performed to investigate 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation activity and α- glucosidase inhibitory activity of 45% alcohol extract of processed Vietnamese ginseng (PVG). The oral tolerance test in mice was applied for in vivo study. The results showed that PVG showed more effective than Red ginseng extract (RG) in all three in vitro tests. In DPPH test, IC50 of PVG was 103.69 µg/ml as compared to RG (IC50 =158.11 µg/ml). For lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity (malondialdehyde assay), IC50 of PVG was 36.33 µg/ml as the same as RG (IC50 = 38.28 µg/ml). In α-glucosidase inhibitory activity test, IC50 of PVG was 185.23 µg/ml that be stronger than RG (IC50 =706.18 µg/ml). The results also showed that PVG as well as RG expressed hypoglycemic effect in the glucose tolerance test.
