Summary

Assessment of Pollen Viability and Germination in Ngoc Linh Ginseng Cultivated in Kon Tum Province

Ngoc Linh ginseng (Panax vietnamensis Ha et Grushv.) is a precious medicinal plant species with high economic and medical values. However, the rate of fruit set in this ginseng species in the wild is still very low. In this study, the viability and germination of Ngoc Linh ginseng pollen grains as a decisive factor determing pollination was evaluated. Research results showed that the viability of Ngoc Linh ginseng pollen grains was higher than 80%. Nevertheless, their germination ability was only about 2% on stigmatic surface. The 7.0-9.0 mg/l boric acid solution improved seed germination ability up to 30-35%. Treating ginseng flowers with boric acid solution could improve pollination ability in Ngoc Linh ginseng.
