Summary

Chemical Constituents from Chinese Artichoke Rhizome (Stachys affinis Bunge)

and their Anti-Microbial Activities

Chinese artichoke (Stachys affinis Bunge, Lamiaceae) has long been cultivated and used as an edible medicinal plant in China, Japan, and several countries in Europe. Four compounds were isolated and identified as stachyose, ethyl a-galactopyranoside, 8-O-acetyl-harpagide, and harpagide. The isolation and structure determination of compounds were used based on the chromatographic techniques and the spectroscopic methods (MS, 1D and 2D NMR). Stachyose and ethyl a-galactopyranoside showed significant inhibitory effects against Streptococcus pyogenes with MIC values of 8 and 4 mg/mL, respectively.

Keywords: Stachys affinis, Stachyose, 8-O-acetyl-harpagide harpagide, Anti-microbial activity.
