Summary

Determination of Chlorpheniramine Adulterated in Herbal Products

Using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography

A high-performance thin layer chromatographic (HPTLC) method was established for the identification, qualitative, and quantitative analysis of chlorpheniramine adulterated in herbal products. The samples were extracted with methanol, followed by TLC separation with cyclohexane-acetone-ammonia as mobile phase and UV scanning detection at 254 nm. The method was validated according to AOAC 2016 guidelines, which showed high specificity, good precision, and accuracy. The validated method was applied to 60 herbal products collected from the market via online purchase, at private pharmacies, or from traditional healthcare practitioners. Chlorpheniramine was detected in 18/60 products.
