Effects of Houttuynia cordata Thunb. Spray Drying Powder on Plasma Interleukin-5 and
Immunoglobulin-E Levels in Ovalbumin-Induced Asthmatic Mice
Houttuynia cordata Thunb. is a well-known perennial herbaceous plant widely used in Eastern traditional medicine, due to its anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties. This present study aimed to investigate the effects of H. cordata spray dried powder (HC-SDP) against allergic asthma in an ovalbumin (OVA) - induced mouse model. Mice were sensitized with OVA (0.2 mg/kg, i.p.) on days 0 and 14th, and then treated with OVA (0.5%, aerosol) on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd days. The interleukin-5 (IL-5) and immunoglobulin-E (IgE) levels in plasma were evaluated by ELISA, OVA- treated mice had a significant increase of IL-5 and IgE levels in plasma compared to control group. OVA mice treated with HC-SDP at a dose of 3.13 g/kg (p.o. from 5th to 22nd days) or a reference drug terbutaline showed a significant reduction of IL-5 and IgE levels, indicating that return to normal physiological condition.
