Summary

Flavonoids from Knema squamulosa W.J. de Wild. and their Antimicrobial Activity

Using chromatographic separation methods, seven compounds were isolated from the methanolic extract of the twigs and leaves of Knema squamulose W.J.de Wild. Their structures were elucidated as: sulfuretin (1), (-)-3,4ʹ,7-trihydroxy-3ʹ-methoxyflavan (2), 7-hydroxy-3ʹ,4ʹ-methylenedioxyflavan (3), (-)-liquiritigenin (4), eriodictyol (5), chysoeriol (6), and luteolin (7) using 1D and 2D-NMR experiments and comparison to those reported in the literature. All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against several bacterial and yeast strains.

Keywords: Knema squamulosa, Myristicaceae, Flavonoids, Antimicrobial activity.
