Summary

Flavonol Methyl Ethers from the Rhizomes of Amomum celsum of Vietnam

Methyl ethers of flavonoids have been known for their role in modulating biological activities of the parent flavonoids; they have also been used as chemotaxonomic markers for plant species. We isolated four compounds 5-hydroxy-3,7,4¢-trimethoxyflavone (1), 5-hydroxy-3,7,3¢,4¢-tetramethoxyflavone (retusin) (2), 5,4¢-dihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyflavone (kumatakenin) (3), and 3,5-diacetoxy-1,7-bis-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)heptane (4) from the rhizomes of Amomum celsum Lamxay & M.F. Newman. The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was performed on the basis of MS and NMR techniques. Compounds 1 and 3 were isolated for the first time from the plant.

Keywords: Amomum celsum, Methylated flavonol, Kaempferol, Quercetin.
