Summary

Investigation of Chemical Constituents of

Cardiospermum halicacabum L. and their Biological Activities

Four compounds were isolated from n-hexane and n-butanol extracts of Cardiospermum halicacabum growing in Vietnam by combined column chromatographic methods. Based on 1D-, 2D-NMR, ESI MS analyses, and comparisons with those published in work of literatures, the structures of these compounds were established as 3β-hydroxyglutin-5-ene (1), zerumbone (2), uridine (3), and daucosterol (4). It is intriguing to point out that, three out of them (1-3) were detected for the first time from the family Sapindaceae. Additionally, the cytotoxic activity of compound 3 was assessed against five human cancer cell lines (A549, T24, Huh-7, 8505, SNU-1) using the SRB method. Additionally, 3 was also evaluated for immunomodulatory capacity through stimulation of IL-2 expression in macrophages (RAW264.7). Compound 3 significantly stimulated IL-2 expression in RAW264.7 cells at a concentration of 100 µg/mL (P<0.05) while no affection was observed at all lower tested concentrations.
