Summary

The α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activity of Paramignya trimera Seeds

Type-2 diabetes is one of the most prevalent metabolic diseases in the world, and is characterized by high level of glucose in the blood. One strategy that has been developed to manage type-2 diabetes is inhibition of the activity of α-glucosidase. The development of new inhibitors from natural products offers a potential option for the control of hyperglycemia due to its biocompatibility and lesser side effects compared to synthetic drugs. In this study, we screened the phytochemical classes and determined the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of seed extract from Paramignya trimera (Oliv.) Guillaum which is a native and precious Vietnamese medicinal plant. The result showed that the seed extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, terpenoids, steroids and coumarins. The α-glucosidase inhibition test exhibited the potential activity of P. trimera seeds with the IC50 value of 51,08±2,32 µg/mL. This preliminary study provided indication to investigate more deeply about the chemicals and activities of this plant seeds to develop a potential lead compounds against diabetes mellitus.
