Summary
The Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Phyllanthus emblica Fruit Extract in Experimental Models
of Acute and Chronic Inflammation
Phyllanthus emblica (PE), a well-known medicinal plant, has been used in Asian countries for a long time. The present study aims to scientifically validate the traditional use of PE in the treatment of inflammatory disorders. Models of acute and chronic inflammation, namely carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and the cotton pellet granuloma in rats were used. In the model of carrageenan-induced paw edema, the extract of PE at the doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg p.o showed a significant reduction in paw edema in comparison with control. In cotton pellet-induced granuloma, the extract of PE at the doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg p.o significantly inhibited granuloma formation in rats.
