Summary

Review: Chemical constituents of the plants in genus Silybum Adans.

There are two species currently classified in the genus Silybum Adans.: Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertner. and Silybum eburneum Coss. & Dur., of which S. marianum has attracted attention of many scientists all over the world for its hepatoprotective action. Up to now, 93 organic compounds and 31 chemical elements have been identified in the species S. marianum and they were all known chemical constituents of the genus Silybum Adans. The main natural constituents in this genus were fatty oil, flavonolignans, flavonoids, lignans, phytosterols, triterpenoids, polyacetylens, aminoacids and some others. Flavonolignans were identified as bioactive components responsible for the hepatoprotective effect. They are chemical characteristics of the genus Silybum Adans.
