Summary

Some Pharmacological Effects of Wisconsin Ginseng Ethanol Extract

Wisconsin ginseng has been cultivated in Wisconsin of United States (US) and be getting the gold standard for high quality American ginseng. The study was performed to investigate some pharmacological effects of 45% ethanol extract from Wisconsin ginseng roots for trends in nutraceuticals, such as antistress, hypoglycemic and androgenic effects. Wisconsin ginseng extract at dose of 1.2 g/kg as well as diazepam (0.5 mg/kg) markedly prolonged the duration of sleep in stressed mice. Wisconsin ginseng extract at doses of 0.6 g/kg and 1.2 g/kg exerted a significant decrease on plasma glucose in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice and in glucose tolerance test. The hypoglycemic effect of Wisconsin ginseng extract after 14-day administration was dose-dependent manner in which the dose of 1.2 g/kg exerted the effect as the same as glibenclamide. Wisconsin ginseng extract (0.6 g/kg and 1.2 g/kg/kg) as well as Testocaps® (testosterone undecanoate) after 14 day-administration significantly elevated plasma testosterone and the weights of internal genital organs in castrated mice.
