Summary
Study on Acute Toxicity and Anti-hyperglycemic Activity of the Extracts Contained 1% and 10% Charantin from Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia L.)
The two extracts contained 1% and 10% charantin from bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) weretested for acute toxicity and anti-hyperglycemic activity. The results showed that both two extract have shown no acute toxicity and significant blood glucose lowering effect in alloxan-induced diabetic mice. The powder contained 1% charantin at the dose of 4 g[S1] /kg body weight reduced 20.0% blood glucose level in mice compared with the control (P<0.01). The powder contained 10% charantin at the doses of 0.1 g and 0.4 g/kg body weight reduced blood glucose level by 17.1% (P <0.01) and 28.7% (P <0.01) compared with the control, respectively.
