Study on Quantitative Evaluation of Silymarin by UV Spectrophotometry

Silymarin is a hepatoprotective substance extracted from Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn. fruits. The bioactive components responsible for the effect of silymarin have been proven to be flavonolignans such as silybin, silychristin, silydianin… For standardization of the product silymarin extracted from the introduced Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn. fruits, an UV method has been established to determine total flavonolignans. The method has good reproductivity (relative standard deviation is 2.11%). It can be used for quality control of raw materials, extracts and pharmaceutical products.
