The Studies on Supporting Effect of Some Reishi-mushrooms (Ganoderma)

in Prolonging the Survival Period of Mice Bearing Sarcoma 180 Tumor

It is well known that some medicinal mushrooms are considered as immune adjuvants in the treatment of cancer and hepatitis and as tonic supplements.  The present study was carried out on supporting the effect of ethanolic and aqueous extracts from Ganoderma applanatum, G. lobatum and G. lucidum in prolonging the survival period of mice bearing transplated Sarcoma 180 tumor cells.

The results have showed that:

- Oral administration of mushroom extracts in combination with Cisplatin after tumor removal has increased the life span of the mice previously bearing tumour by 33 to 103% in comparision with those using Cisplatin alone. This effect is dependent on the doses used.

- The best effect was observed in the group of mice having been administered aqueous extract of G. applanatum (2400 mg/kg), G. lobatum (1200 mg/kg) and G. lucidum (1200 mg/kg). These extracts have increased the rate of surviving mice by 40, 30 and 30%, respectively, in the 45th day after tumour transplantation and in the 35th day after surgical tumour removal.
