Summary

Anti-fatigue, Anti-hyperglycemic and Anti-inflammatory Effects of Moringa oleifera Stem Barks

The 45% ethanolic extract from Moringa oleifera stem barks (MOB-E) was used for the study. Brekhman’s mouse swimming test was applied to investigate the anti-fatigue effect. The oral glucose tolerance test and streptozotocin-induced diabetic model were used for study on anti-hyperglycemic effect. The carrageenan-induced paw edema and myeloperoxidase (MPO) assay were applied for study on anti-inflammatory effects. The results revealed that MOB-E at the oral doses of 0.44 g/kg and 0.88 g/kg (equivalent to 5 - 10 g of raw materials) expressed the anti-fatigue effect after 14-day administration. MOB-E at the dose of 0.88 g/kg after 7-day administration showed the hypoglycemic effect which was as the same as glibenclamide. The extract reduced mouse paw edema and MPO activity when compared with the untreated groups, indicating anti-inflammatory effects.
