Summary
Chemical Constituents and Biological Activity of Pouzolzia zeylanica (L.) Benn Whole Plant
Four compounds were isolated from Pouzolzia zeylanica whole plant, including: linoleic acid (1), β-sitosterol (2), oleanolic acid (3), 2-(4ʹ-hydroxyphenyl) ethyl-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1′′′→6″)-β-D-glucopyranoside (4). Their structures were determined based on 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR, HR-ESI-MS spectral data, and comparisons with previous reports. The effects of P. zeylanica fractions and isolated compounds on the ability to scavenge 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical assay and β-hexosaminidase production by RBL-2H3 cell were investigated. The ethyl acetate fraction and compound 4 showed moderate activity against DPPH free radical with EC50 values of 48.5 ± 0.7 and 86.2 ± 0.56 μg/mL, respectively. Dichloromethane, n-hexane fractions, compounds 3 and 4 inhibited the β-hexosaminidase release with IC50 values of 11.665 ± 0.735, 46.235 ± 0.075, 3.5 ± 0.08, 81.23 ± 2.34 μg, respectively. This is the first time, the effect of P. zeylanica in the β-hexosaminidase release on the RBL-2H3 cell was studied as well as the compounds 1 and 4 were found.
Keywords: Pouzolzia zeylanica, Antioxidant, Anti-allergic activity, Oleanolic acid, β-hexosaminidase release.
