Summary
Cytotoxic Activity of Extracts and Compounds from Paris polyphylla var. chinensis Franchet
on PANC-1 Human Pancreatic Cancer Cells
Paris polyphylla var. chinensis Franchet (PC) has been used as a traditional medicine for treatment of various diseases including tumor and variety of cancers for long time. This study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic activity against PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells of the PC extracts and four compounds isolated from the rhizomes of Paris polyphylla var. chinensis Franchet (PCR) by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-di-phenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results showed that both the rhizome and aerial parts had a remarkable cytotoxic activity against PANC-1 cells. Four compounds including gracillin, diosgenin, paris saponin D, and paris saponin H isolated from the rhizome showed potent cytotoxic activity on PANC-1 cells with IC50 values of 5.97, 50.04, 12.57, and 7.07 µM, respectively. Overall, the results suggested that PC would be a potential cytotoxic agent on PANC-1 human pancreatic cancer cells.
