Summary

Evaluation of Essential Fatty Acids, Vitamin E and EPA Contents

in Nannochloropsis oculata Microalgae and its Bioactivities

Nannochloropsis oculata microalgae were cultured in closed bioreactor systems in August and September (summer) with average temperature 32oC; pH 7.8 - 8.0; light 15900 lux and in March and April (spring) with average temperature 23.2oC; pH 7.7 - 8.4; light 11800 lux. The culture biomass was collected and dried to powder. The content of fatty acid components including EPA and vitamin E in dried microalgae powders were analyzed by gas chromatography. The acute toxicity effect was tested on Swiss mice and the antioxidant activity was determined with DPPH by DPPH radical scavenging assay. Results showed that the content of unsaturated fatty acids including omega 3, omega 6, pentadecanoic acid, palmitoleic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, vitamin E and EPA were high on both summer and spring culture samples. The microalgae showed potent antioxidant effect. No acute toxic effect was recorded in mices after treatment with a maximum oral dose of dried microalgae (40 mg/kg b.w.). So Nannochloropsis oculata microalgae cultured in close bioreactors can be used as a source of organic essential fatty acids, vitamins E and EPA for pharmaceuticals and functional foods.
