Summary

Genetic Relationship Among Different Cultivars of Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms in Vietnam Based on Morphological Characteristics and Sequences of “rbcL” Gene

Dinh Lang (Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms) is now a popular crop grown as an ornamental plant in Vietnam. Dinh Lang has been included in the Pharmacopoeia of Vietnam and has long been used in Oriental medicine called "Ginseng of the poor". Although Dinh Lang is widely cultivated in our country, the genetic study of this crop is not systematically considered. The objective of this study is to evaluate the genetic characteristics of several Dinh Lang varieties/species collected of ten provinces in Vietnam based on morphological characteristics and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) marker in the rbcL gene region. The results showed that there is difference among phenotypes of varieties/species collected from different regions due to environmental and farming conditions. For genotypes, most varieties/species belong to the species Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms as compared with the rbcL sequences on NCBI. Based on phylogenetic tree, 10 samples of Dinh Lang varieties/species can be divided into two groups: Group I involves 6 samples from Dong Nai, Gia Lai, Quang Nam (sub-group Ia), Can Tho, Thanh Hoa, An Giang (sub-group Ib); Group II includes samples from Nam Dinh, Dien Bien, Phu Tho (sub-group II) and samples from Ho Chi Minh city.
Keywords: Polyscias fruticosa (L.) Harms, rbcL gene, Phylogenetic tree.
