Summary
Immunomodulating Effect of Ganoderma lucidum on Cyclophosphamide-Induced Leukopenia in Mice
The present study was designed to determine the efficacy of the extracts from G. lucidum on immunological effector cells in cyclophosphamide-induced leukopenia. The results showed that cyclophosphamide decreased the percentage of lymphocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells. The 5-day administration of G. lucidum ethanol extract (295 mg/kg), aqueous extract (390 mg/kg), and crude polysaccharides (100 mg/kg) partly restored the changes in the percentages of lymphocytes, monocytes, CD4+ and CD8+ cells in immunosuppressed mice. G. lucidum ethanol extract and crude polysaccharides, as well as levamisole, increased the percentage of granulocytes which was statistically different as compared to immunosuppressed control and normal control. G. lucidum aqueous extract increased the percentage of granulocytes as compared to immunosuppressed control and recovered it to normal values. These findings suggest that G. lucidum would be beneficial in alleviating the reduction of immune response by chemotherapeutic anti-cancer drugs.
