Summary

In vitro Antioxidant and Antidiabetic Activities of Moringa oleifera Stem Barks

The aqueous and ethanol extracts (45%, 70% and 96% ethanol extracts) from Moringa oleifera stem bark cultivated in Cuba were used for in vitro study. DPPH radical scavenging assay and xanthine oxidase inhibitory assay were applied for study on antioxidant activity. α-Amylase inhibitory assay and α-glucosidase inhibitory assay were applied for study on antidiabetic activity. The results revealed that the extracts of M. oleifera stem bark expressed DPPH radical scavenging activity, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. Based on IC50, the aqueous extract and the 45% ethanol extract of M. oleifera stem bark exerted xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity more typical than the others, respectively.
