Summary

Study on the Antidiabetic Effect of Mimosa pudica Linn. Leaf Water Extract

Traditional medicine uses Mimosa pudica for supporting the treatment of diabetes. This study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant effect, α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and anti-hyperglycemic effect of Mimosa pudica leaf (MPL) water extract. Mimosa pudica leaves were extracted by boiling with distilled water for 1 hour, repeating three times. The extract was evaluated the antioxidant activity by scavenging DPPH free radicals, α-glucosidase inhibitory activity in vitro and anti-hyperglycemic effect in vivo on streptozotocin induced diabetic mices (120 mg/kg b.w. i.p). Our results showed that MPL water extract had moderate antioxidant effect with IC50 values of 6.32 mg/mL, strong α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 3.09 µg/mL. In addition, MPL water extract also showed strong anti-hyperglycemic effect on diabetic mice. Our data showed that Mimosa pudica leaves water extract has the potential antidiabetic effect.
