Summary

Antioxidant Activity of Crude Polysaccharides Extracted from Ganoderma subresinosum

The present study was designed to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses of polysaccharides extracted from Ganoderma subresinosum and to examine its antioxidant activityThis mushroom contained the main sugars which are presented in other Ganoderma species, such as: glucose, galactose, and xylose. The total sugar content of Ganoderma subresinosum was in the range of 43.14-43.82% and the total reducing sugar was 14.85% of dried polysaccharides powder. The free radical scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) test and the anti-lipid peroxidation effect on malonyl dialdehyde (MDA) test of its extracts were also elucidated.Combined two these assays, the antioxidant capacity of crude polysaccharides was weaker than that of aqueous extract and ethanol extract. Aqueous extract presented highest antioxidant capacity, suggesting that it was composed of more antioxidant substances.

1. Introduction

Ganoderma lucidum (known as Lingzhi in China and Reishi in Japan) has become one of the natural sources in the treatment of leukemia, carcinoma, hepatitis and diabetes. This mushroom is now being used to complement or sometimes substitute in modernmedicine. Polysaccharides, peptidoglycans, and triterpenes are three major physiologically active constituents in Ganodermalucidum [2]. Ganoderma subresinosum (Amauroderma subresinosum) is known as black lingzhi with ear-shaped fruiting body like other kinds of lingzhi mushroom. This species is an edible wild mushroom commonly obtained from national forests in Vietnam.Ganoderma subresinosum is a rare species of the Ganodermataceae family and its biological activity has not been unknown to date. The present study was designed to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses of polysaccharides extracted fromGanoderma subresinosum and to evaluate its antioxidant activity.
