Acute and Subchronic Toxicity of the Leaf and Stem extract of Callisia fragrans (Lindl.) Woods.
The freeze-dried leaves juice (LVL) and the ethanol-aqueous stems extract (LVT) of Callisia fragrans (Lindl.) Woods. were experimentally evaluated for acute and subchronic oral toxicity in mice and rabbits. The results indicated that LD50 of the leaves juice and the ethanol-aqueous stems extract in mice is equivalent to 1075.6 g and 1115.2 fresh material/kg body weight, respectively. In the subchronic study, rabbits were administrated LVL with the dose equivalent to 6 g, 18 g, 60 g fresh leaves/kg/day and LVT with the dose equivalent to 1.2 g, 3.6 g, 12 g fresh stems/kg/day for 60 days. After 15, 30, 60 and 75 days, blood and tissue samples were taken for hematological, biochemical and histopathological determinations. All hematological, biochemical parameters showed non-significant difference between treatment and control groups, but mild liver inflammation and congestion and mild interstitial nephritis were seen in some individuals.
