Summary
Thirty methanol extracts from Vietnamese plants were screened for their radical scavenging activity using DPPH• assay. Of those, the methanol extracts of Eurya ciliata Merr., Ampelopsis japonica (Thunb.) Makino leaves, Strophioblachia fimbricalyx Boerl. leaves, Rubus cochinchinensis Tratt. leaves, Gouania javanica Miq. stem, Elaeocarpus angustifolius Blume leaves, and Balanophora fungosa J.R. et Forster whole plant, exhibited high antioxidant activity with scavenging capacity value of more than 70% at a concentration of 200 μg/mL in 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) assay. Chrysoeriol, a principle flavonoid isolated from the bioactive fraction of Eurya ciliata leaves, has SC50 value of 44.42 μg/mL.
Key words: DPPH• radical scavenging assay, Vietnamese plants, antioxidant, chrysoeriol.
